Is it safe to buy from AliExpress?

I've been asked this question many a time from my family, friends and even from people on Reddit forums. So here is the answer.

YES, it is safe to buy from AliExpress.

I will explain why it is so below, where I will give a summary of who and what "AliExpress" is, my experience with them over the past 2 years and more reasons why it is safe and economical in some cases to buy from AliExpress. So if you are still interested in knowing more and need to have a peace of mind before making your next purchase on AliExpress, then continue to read this post.

About AliExpress

AliExpress is like any other online retailer like other well known online retailers like Amazon, Newegg, Flipkart etc. Therefore, AliExpress allows companies or stores to sell the products they have on the AliExpress Website.

AliExpress was launched in 2010 and is a part of the Alibaba Group. Alibaba group has its main website which is a well-known Wholesale retailer website which connects manufacturers with retailers. While on the other hand, AliExpress caters directly to consumers who want to buy items directly from the suppliers/stores on their website.

My Experience with AliExpress

I have been buying products from AliExpress from the Start of 2019. I was a bit skeptical at first but with time AliExpress has gained my trust. So I do my research, comparisons and take into consideration of price, shipping cost and duration, before finalizing if to do the purchase with one of the stores in AliExpress or with other online retailers like Amazon, Newegg etc. Note, AliExpress is not my first or favoured option, but if the price is right I buy the item from AliExpress.

Note: To read more about how you can make a smart purchasing decision read my other blog post on Saving Money when buying Tech.

In the above pics, you will see I started my first purchase from AliExpress all the way back in Jan 2019. It is odd that I made such a pricey first buy ($129), from a site I have never used before, but it was the only place, where I could find a decent replacement internal battery for my Razer Blade 2017 laptop at a reasonable price with shipping. Anyway, in the end, the battery reached me safe and sound and is working perfectly to this date in my laptop, I could say it even works better than the original battery which was in the laptop which lasted a mere 1.5 years before it started bulging for no reason (this was an issue for many Razer Blade 14 owners at the time).

Since then, from my first purchase, I have slowly with time bought more and more items from AliExpress and most of them have been delivered to me, and they operate/function as they are supposed to without any issues. Till today, I have made orders for around 40+ items, all but 3 items did not reach me (check the 2nd last pic in the screenshots above) and those 3 items were ordered during the covid pandemic, so it is understandable it got lost somewhere in between. However, all 3 of these orders, I have been refunded the amount of the product (including shipping charges, if any). I got the refund by raising a dispute (you have to wait for 3 months to raise dispute for an item that's not being delivered), after which either the supplier agreed for the refund or when the supplier did not agree, AliExpress stepped in and issued the refund (check the last pic in the screenshots above).

Therefore, so far my experience with suppliers/stores in AliExpress has been good. The suppliers/stores are also quick to respond (usually within 24 hours) when you have some clarifications before, during and after making the purchase with them. So you see how AliExpress has gained my trust, mind you, it is not blind trust as I still do some research on the store and the product I am about to buy before finally making the order. Also, it's essential to look out for Sales season among all stores on AliExpress, during which you can grab some awesome deals on products.

Based on all that I have said till now I hope I have cleared some, or maybe even most of your concerns regarding making your next purchase from AliExpress. You could, start small try purchasing some low-value items, and work your way up when you feel you have enough trust in them.

However, like I always say, do your research and comparisons to make sure you are getting the best deal rather than buying blindly from AliExpress because you might have a better deal elsewhere or get the same thing for the same or lower price from you local retailer.

Note: is also another online retailer website I have purchased from and up till now it's been ok.
